EMDR Intensives

EMDR Intensives

What to Expect During an EMDR Intensive

An EMDR Intensive is a focused, structured therapy experience designed to help you make significant progress toward your healing goals in a condensed period of time. Unlike traditional weekly therapy, intensive therapy provides dedicated time to address the root causes of distress, process difficult experiences, and strengthen your ability to move forward with greater clarity and confidence.

Before Your Intensive

Your journey begins with a comprehensive consultation where we will discuss your history, current concerns, treatment goals, and readiness for EMDR therapy. Together, we will identify the experiences, memories, beliefs, or symptoms you would like to address during the intensive. If desired, you may also receive a personalized workbook to help you prepare for the process.

During Your Intensive

Your intensive is tailored specifically to your needs and treatment goals. Sessions typically include:

  • Building and strengthening coping skills and emotional regulation strategies

  • Identifying target memories, experiences, or negative beliefs contributing to current distress

  • Processing these experiences using EMDR therapy

  • Installing healthier, more adaptive beliefs and perspectives

  • Taking intentional breaks to support emotional regulation and integration

EMDR intensives are not simply hours of continuous processing. The day is carefully structured to balance therapeutic work with opportunities for grounding, reflection, and rest. Your comfort, safety, and emotional well-being remain priorities throughout the process.

What You May Experience

Each person's experience is unique. During and after EMDR processing, you may notice:

  • New insights or perspectives

  • Changes in emotional intensity related to past experiences

  • Increased clarity regarding personal patterns or relationships

  • Physical sensations, emotions, or memories emerging as part of the healing process

  • A sense of relief, empowerment, or increased emotional freedom

Some clients feel energized and lighter after an intensive, while others may feel tired or emotionally reflective. Both experiences can be a normal part of the therapeutic process.

After Your Intensive

Healing and integration continue after the intensive concludes. During your follow-up session, we will review your progress, discuss any ongoing experiences, answer questions, and develop recommendations for continued support if needed.

You may be encouraged to prioritize rest, hydration, self-care, and reduced obligations in the days following your intensive to allow your mind and body time to integrate the work completed.

Is an EMDR Intensive Right for You?

EMDR Intensives can be an effective option for individuals who want a focused approach to healing, have limited availability for weekly therapy, or are seeking accelerated progress toward specific treatment goals. A consultation is required to determine whether an intensive is clinically appropriate and aligned with your individual needs.

The goal of an EMDR Intensive is not to rush healing, but to create dedicated space for meaningful therapeutic work that supports lasting change.

• Intensive EMDR treatment is feasible and is indicative of reliable improvement in PTSD symptoms in a very short time frame. Learn more here.

• An intensive program using EMDR therapy is a potentially safe and effective treatment alternative for complex PTSD. Learn more here.

• The economy is compelling: even compared to other trauma therapies, the intensive format may decrease treatment time, because of time not spent on a) checking in at the beginning of each session, b) addressing current crises and concerns, c) focusing on stabilizing and coping skills that the client won’t need after trauma healing, or d) assisting the client in regaining composure at the end of the session.
